Trust: The Cooler Story of John Paul Getty’s Kidnapping on FX

FX is banking that the kidnapping of John Paul Getty will be a TV hit.

Everyone once and a while a trailer is released that makes you wonder, “Is this what I’ll be happily watching on Sunday night with a glass of wine for the next 5 years of life?” This trailer for Trust makes you ask that question. The trailer feels like Breaking Bad meets Dynasty.

Inspired by a true events, Trust delves into the story of the Getty family – one of America’s strangest and wealthiest families. And, if you’re a 90s kid, it’s always great to see Brendan Fraser working and in something cool.

The series begins in 1973 with the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III (played by Harris Dickinson), who is an heir to the Getty oil fortune, by the Italian mafia in Rome. His captors logically believed that Paul’s grandfather J. Paul Getty Senior (Donald Sutherland), the oil tycoon would pay a heft ransom – they were wrong. What happens next is anything but logical.

Only Paul’s mother, Gail Getty (played by Hilary Swank), is willing to negotiate with the kidnappers. Unfortunately, she’s broke. J. Paul Getty Senior seems to be too busy bedding everyone in California to care. Trust tracks Paul’s ordeal at the hands of kidnappers who simply cannot understand why nobody seems to want him back.

The cast also includes Brendan Fraser, Anna Chancellor, Norbert Leo Butz, Charlotte Riley and Luca Marinelli. Trust airs on FX on March 25, 2018
